Understanding the history of the International Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons in Training (IAMFST) is crucial for appreciating the context and the need for the formation of the International Affiliations of Trainees in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (iATOMS). Although IAMFST and iATOMS are separate entities, the dissolution of IAMFST left a significant gap in the professional community of maxillofacial surgery trainees. iATOMS, founded in 2023, aims to fill this gap by providing a modern, inclusive, and collaborative platform for young surgeons worldwide, continuing the legacy of fostering international connections and professional development that IAMFST once upheld.
The International Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons in Training (IAMFST) was established in Geneva on December 6, 1986, under the Swiss Civil Code (IAMFST Constitution). The association was officially ratified in Guildford on September 4, 1993. IAMFST aimed to foster interpersonal contacts and communication within the profession, giving surgeons in training more opportunities to visit other centers and attend international meetings.
Despite its significant contributions, IAMFST faced numerous challenges over the years. Internal disputes and disagreements about the organization’s future direction and management eventually led to its dissolution. However, IAMFST’s legacy as a pioneering organization that influenced many careers in maxillofacial surgery remains significant.
The original IAMFST logo features a stylized depiction of a face, symbolizing the focus on maxillofacial surgery. The design incorporates elements representing both medical and dental aspects, highlighting the dual qualifications (M.D. and D.D.S.) required for membership. The logo’s clean lines and professional appearance reflect the association’s commitment to excellence in training and practice.
In 2023, inspired by IAMFST’s goals and ideals, the Institute of International Affiliations of Trainees in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (iATOMS) was founded. iATOMS aims to fill the void left by IAMFST’s dissolution, building upon its achievements. The new organization seeks to provide a modern, inclusive, and collaborative platform for young surgeons worldwide.
While IAMFST laid the groundwork for international collaboration among maxillofacial surgery trainees, iATOMS expands on this foundation with a broader and more inclusive mission. Under the motto “together indivisible (simul indivisibile),” iATOMS emphasizes the following principles and purposes:
With a strong emphasis on international networking and collaboration, iATOMS is dedicated to nurturing and inspiring the next generation of oral and maxillofacial surgeons. By offering resources, educational programs, and global networking opportunities, iATOMS remains true to IAMFST’s original spirit while addressing the challenges of the 21st century.
